Smt. Yasho Rajya Lakshmi was married at a very early age to Dr. (then Yuvraj) Karan Singh, and almost immediately had to undertake the responsibilities of being the wife of the Head of State for the next 17 years. This involved not only entertaining dignitaries at their residence, but also accompanying her husband on extensive tours within the State. Along with her husband, she also undertook her studies and passed her B.A. and Prabhakar (Hindi) examinations.
Before she reached the age of 18, Smt Yasho Rajya Lakshmi was appointed Chairman of the Jammu & Kashmir State Social Welfare Board. In that capacity, she undertook several important activities in various parts of the State, including setting up of work centres, creches and other social welfare projects. The Chairman of the Central Social Welfare Board, Smt Durgabai Deshmukh, gave her a good deal of guidance and encouragement in these activities. She set up a branch of the All India Women's Conference in 1956, and also developed the Ladies Club in Srinagar and Jammu, which undertook a series of social and community welfare programmes. During the 1962 and 1965 wars she was active in relief work both in Srinagar and in Jammu.
In 1967, Dr Karan Singh was inducted as a Cabinet Minister in Mrs Indira Gandhi's Government with the portfolio of Tourism and Civil Aviation, which he held for 6 years. During this period, Smt Yasho Rajya Lakshmi played a major role in functions connected with tourism promotion in India and abroad. Later, when Dr Karan Singh moved to the Ministry of Health and Family Planning, she undertook extensive visits to hospitals and was President of the Delhi Hospital Welfare Society.
Soon after they moved to Delhi, Smt Yasho Rajya Lakshmi became interested in the problems of mentally handicapped children. A small centre had been set up in the All India Women's Conference and later taken over by the Delhi Society for the Welfare of Mentally Retarded Children. She became President of this Society in 1968 and continues to head the organisation since then. As a result of her initiative, a large plot of land was acquired at Okhla opposite the Holy Family Hospital and through a vigorous and sustained fundraising effort including substantial personal contributions, a beautiful institution has been set up there known as the Okhla Centre. This now caters to over 300 mentally retarded children and includes a sheltered workshop, a vocational training centre, a diagnostic clinic and several other rehabilitation facilities. It is now recognised as one of the finest institutions of its kind in the country.
Thus, apart from looking after her own children and grandchildren, Smt Yasho Rajya Lakshmi has always been in the forefront of social welfare and development. She has attended a number of seminars in India and abroad, and is also a member of the FICCI Ladies Organisation.
