Amar Mahal Museum & Library, placed in a picturesque setting of Himalayas, is an epitome of royal grandeur and magnificence.


The museum building forms the major part of the Amar Mahal. Build in a majestic style, its architecture has a French touch. The Amar Mahal Museum is a veritable storehouse of historical documents. It has rich collection of exhibits, including sculptures, paintings, inscriptions, books, etc. The Durbar Hall exhibits the paintings and artworks of the Dogra rulers. The Golden Throne, the major attraction of the museum, is a symbol of great historic significance.
The Library has a wide collection of books that range from religion, philosophy, political science to fiction. Besides, is contains books from various bestsellers international authors. The library is used as a reference house by the students.
It is the most visited area of the Amar Mahal.
Durbar Hall
The first & second floors of Amar Mahal are filled with over twenty thousand books collected by Dr. Karan Singh over the last fifty years, including some rare volumes from the Library of Raja Amar SinghThe largest hall in the Amar Mahal is the Durbar Hall which displays portraits of the Dogra rulers beginning with the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir state, Maharaja Gulab Singh, his successor Maharaja Ranbir Singh, his three sons Maharaja Pratap Singh, Raja Ram Singh, Raja Amar Singh, Maharaja Hari Singh and Maharani Tara Devi, Dr. Karan Singh and his wife, Mrs. Yasho Rajya Lakshmi. The hall can accommodate over hundred people and is used for seminars, lectures, workshops and other gatherings from time to time.

This priceless throne is a symbol of great historic significance and attracts tremendous interest among the thousands of visitors who come to Amar Mahal every year from all over India and the world.

Nepal Room Maharani Yasho Rajya Lakshmi is the granddaughter of the last Rana Prime Minister of Nepal, Maharaja Mohum Shumsher J.B. RanaMaharani Yasho Rajya Lakshmi is the granddaughter of the last Rana Prime Minister of Nepal, Maharaja Mohum Shumsher J.B. Rana and there is a room on the ground floor where photographs and objects d’art from Nepal are displayed, including a rare portrait of Maharaja Jung Bahadur, the founder of the Rana dynasty. This room is used from time to time for conferences and formal meetings of the museum.

These books cover a wide spectrum of topics with special attention to Religion, Philosophy, Political Science as well as an astonishingly varied collection of Fiction. There is also a Hindi section and books in several foreign languages. The entire collection is properly catalogued but is not open to the general public. Post-doctoral students from Jammu University in selected areas are being invited to use the library as a reference resource. The library has a rare book section that contains books with hand coloured engravings and wood block prints as illustrations. The library is being made accessible to national and international universities for research scholars through the Internet, in collaboration with the University of Jammu.

A fascinating dimension of Amar Mahal is the suite occupied by Maharani (later Maharajmata) Tara Devi, which as been preserved almost exactly as it was when she resided there. The silver bedspread, the period furniture and photographs, her personal items of clothing andRajMata suite the unique Victorian bathroom combine to make this a section of historical significance. The bedroom has two large portraits, one of Maharajmata Tara Devi dressed in a saffron robe seated in her Puja room, and the other of Queen Victoria. The decoration Crown of India, which she received in 1945, is also displayed there.
